  1. Hi Caddies Creek and the other Penrith classes!

This is 5E with our favourite “Law on the Goldfields” PMI results:

    PLUS:

Some diggers would help each other – the great Aussie mateship tradition! (Tommy, Ben, Naim, Mohammad & Vlad.)

    MINUS:

Many diggers carried weapons to torture people who went onto their territory, and bushrangers ambushed people’s coaches and escort wagons to steal gold. (Joel, Tatenda, Luke, Sarith & Jeff.)

Claim jumpers were often shot dead by other diggers. (Tayla, Alicia, Anousha, Yating & Taela.)

    INTERESTING:

Some diggers resented the system of buying a gold licence. They often hid until the inspector left. (Ethan, Dallas & Jesse.)

Law on the Aussie goldfields was under the Gold Commissioner. (Pavarthy, Grace, Homa, Mayesha, Rasharna & Kaylee.)

Diggers would often punish law breakers (claim jumpers) themselves. (Steven, Johnathon, Aimie & Cherisse.)

Best wishes from 5E @ Penrith PS

  2. Hello everyone!

This is 6W with our favourite “Law on the Goldfields” PMI results:

    PLUS:

Lots of gold was found in Australia, attracting people who had been to the American gold rush! (Lochlan, Tim, Mathew & Tanika.)

In some areas, diggers (miners) made their own laws. (Matthew, Kevin & Weivan.)

    MINUS:

Bullies, cheats and robbers would steal from people who had not done anything bad. (Shannon, Dilshad, Matthew & Austin.)

    INTERESTING:

If a licenced digger found gold he or she could keep it. (Aleana, Caitlyn, Zahra & Sarah.)

The digger who first started at a certain place owned the claim. (Bailey, Hayley, Jamie & Praise.)

A common way to do this was to pound four sticks (stakes) into the corners. (Abdul, Bryson, Tahj, Bradley.)

  3. Hi CCPS and PPS,

Here is 6B’s PMI of favourite gold facts:

    PLUS:

Most diggers were peaceful and cooperative.

Most Australian bushrangers were eventually shot dead, or captured and questioned.

    MINUS:

Gold mining equipment was very dear.

There was criminal violence at the gold fields.

Some gold mining shafts fell in and killed the miners.

Ned Kelly believed that sometimes the police were untrustworthy.

    INTERESTING:

Bushrangers robbed by surprise – jumping out in front of horse-drawn coaches.

Sometimes the miners punished the criminals themselves.

“Ned Kelly’s Jerilderie Letter” is a shortlisted book for Book Week this year.
